Meet Kevin Spencer.
Currently wanted by fellow TR7 owners for being too lucky. After
all... have you ever managed to bag a 1976 5 speed TR7 with only
33,000 miles on the clock for just £1? Read on to hear Kevin's
story in his own words.

Hi folks, my name is
Kevin Spencer. I have just discovered your site thanks to a friend of
mine and would like to say how good it looks. I own a 1976 5 speed TR7
with only 33,000 miles on the clock. Surprisingly it is an original
5 speed which was purchased on the 21/12/1976, its chassis number is
ACG11865. I believe it was one of the first to have a 5 speed box, and
I have been told that after my car was made Leyland ran out of 5 speed
boxes and went back to using four speed boxes for some time. How true
that is I am not sure, but perhaps some clever person can confirm this.
I came across it one day whilst I was out on a firecall. It was parked
on the drive next to the house we were at and I couldn't resist having
a look. The car seemed totally original and in very good condition.
The son of the owner came out and he told me that his dad had owned
it from new and had maintained it regardless of cost. Unfortunately
I had to go back to the station then, so I thought no more of it for
a few days.

About
a week later the car turned up at my fire station and an elderly gent asked
who had been looking at his car the week before. I thought oh God, I hope
I hadn't scratched it or anything, but I stood up resolutely and said it
was me. After some introductions, Eddie, the owner, asked if I would like
to buy the car from him as he was getting too old to enjoy it anymore. I
had to decline due to a lack of funds but he then told me that if I was
prepared to look after it I could have it for the sum of……..
£1…….. yes, that is what I said, …….. £1.
After thinking about it for about, oh, a nanosecond I bit his hand off! |

The
car came complete with a full service history, all bills and receipts, it's
handbook, a current M.O.T. certificate (and all the old ones), the original
bill of sale, oh, and a jerry can full of four star! I have owned it for
about a year now and have used it daily through the summer, but it is living
tucked up in my garage for the Winter. The picture below is of how the car
looks now after I had begun the task of repairing the minor bits of rust
and the almost inevitable 'trolley rash' that the car had accumulated over
the years.

My
intention is to get it resprayed over the Winter so I get it back to its
original appearance as soon as possible. The main jobs I have done so far
are:-
• Resprayed back panel to original satin black
• Resprayed windscreen panel as above
• Resprayed sills in original satin black
• Cleaned and resprayed wheels
• Filled and resprayed all wheel arches
• Fitted uprated rear shocks
• Polish like a madman on an almost daily basis

I
have only done about 1000 miles in my little wedge, but I have enjoyed every
one of them. One last point, this TR7 is the 9th one that I've owned over
a seven year period, but is without a doubt the best 'unrestored' tr7 I've
personally seen. |

I hope you
all enjoy this tale of a jammy Scouser and I hope to speak to you again
