  • Removing the windscreen finisher

Finisher after spraying

The windscreen base finishers are prone to rust, usually from the inside out, so it is always a good idea to prepare the back of a new one with a stoneguard type of paint before fitting to prolong life. When these are received from the Supplier they often come in the perfect satin black colour required. However it would be wrong to put the finisher straight on as this is just a factory coating to prevent rusting during warehousing and is not a suitable finish to stand against the U.K. elements. Therefore the finisher needs to be rubbed down and sprayed satin black, the more coats the merrier.

First job has to be to remove the wipers including the nuts below the splines (see “removing Windscreen Wipers” section). Next on the agenda is to remove the two securing screws that are found at each of the two far corners of the finisher over beside the edge of the wings. Now detach the fresh air scoop as its catches will get in the way of removal, then take of the rubber seals that line the edge of the windscreen panel. Depress the two splined parts of the wiper mechanism as far down into the holes they come up from as possible and the finisher can now be removed while twisting the finisher upwards and towards the front of the car in a circular motion, taking care not to damage the ends of the wings. It can be good practice to put masking tape over the ends of the wings to prevent the finisher scraping the paint during removal. Refitting is pretty much the reverse of removal. Take care while refitting the two nuts, it is very easy to ring the threads.
