If you are working
under the car, use axle stands or ramps, never trust your jack to
keep the car up and the use of breeze blocks should be purely for
idiotic wheel thieves (it would appear) and cartoon characters. If
you are using something that is a possible source of ignition (e.g.
a sparking angle grinder, welder etc) make sure the carbs, fuel lines
and the fuel tank (in fact anything fuel is flowing through) are covered
with a fire blanket and always keep a fire extinguisher close at hand.
Before tackling a job
it is advisable to disconnect the negative terminal on your battery
to prevent electrocution or any errant sparks igniting fuel where
the job in question allows this to happen. Please bear in mind that
Waxoyl in sills can ignite if you are welding them, particularly if
it has been freshly applied. You don’t want to find out the hard
way that a fire extinguisher struggles to reach the inner sills to
put out the blaze. Exposed flame heaters (e.g. a Superser) should
not be used in a garage where you are keeping or working at a car
in case a fuel leak reaches the flame.
Two-Pack paint is an
isocyanate and should only be applied while wearing suitable safety
clothing (i.e. a Tyvek suit), goggles and an extractor mask so the
cyanide cannot be absorbed through the skin or ingested. Always follow
the safety instructions on any tools you use (e.g. goggles while grinding)
and be careful not to approach any moving parts if you are wearing
loose clothing. Lack of webspace has prevented us from listing all
the precautions advisable with each technical article, your safety
may be our wish but it is very much your responsibility.
Please be careful and
if you think a job is beyond your ability or you have reservations
about being able to do it safely then we urge you to obtain the services
of a professional.
